Ukulele Course for Kids

Ukulele Course for Kids:
What you get is a 45-page book (in pdf form). It’s beautifully formatted with photos! It starts with an introduction to the ukulele and illustrations telling you what all the parts are, how to tune it, how to strum, and then some basic music theory (staff, treble clef, barlines, measures, time signatures). Page 5 gives the first lesson: strumming practice. Then, there is a 4-question quiz to review what they have learned so far.
Next, we begin to learn about how to play specific notes by placing the fingers of the left hand on the strings. There are photos showing when to put your fingers in relation to the fret. Then, we begin to learn how to play chords (the C chord to start with) and there is music to play with that chord plus a quarter rest. I love that there is a little lesson to learn how to draw a quarter rest and put them on a staff!
Now, it’s time to start playing songs. Most of the songs in this introductory course will be just playing chords while singing along. Along with learning the song with the book, there are also videos for each that show you how to play it and how to sing it. I’m sure kids will love playing along with the videos!

One of the best things about this course is its comprehensive nature. There is more music theory than I mentioned above scattered throughout the rest of the book, and worksheets to be filled in. Two great activities that are included are suggestions on how to put on your own concert and how to write your own song, complete with blank staff paper!
I highly recommend the Ukulele Course for Kids. It’s unique and such a wonderful way to get younger kids started on learning a musical instrument. They can start on the ukulele when they’re in elementary school and move on the guitar when they get bigger. Or, they might decide that they love the ukulele and will want to stay with it!

I have a ukulele I brought back from HI years ago. I have dabbled just a bit and love the sound.
Fun! Its such a beautiful light hearted sound.

We have drum, guitar, and didgeridoo players, but no ukulele players yet! It sounds fun!

Sounds like fun. Wonder how easy it is to find a used ukelele! Do they come in various sized like other stringed instruments?

As for different sizes, yes ukuleles come in 4 different sizes. Soprano (smallest great for toddlers or elementary age children) Concert, Tenor (my favorite size for me) and Baritone (which is tuned different than the first three)

My son (turning 7) said just this week he would like to learn to play the ukulele. My father played years ago – before I came along late in life. He has been gone now almost 13 years, but my son looks a lot like his childhood pictures. It would be neat if my son took it up 🙂 My niece, a sophomore in college, learned to play in high school (she plays guitar too) and she is really good. It is a neat little instrument and she says she can take it places sometimes where she can’t take her guitar.
