15-Minute Music Lesson About Instruments Around the World
A few years ago I published one of my all-time favorite courses called World Music for Elementary. Why do I love it so much? Because I love learning about instruments around the world, as well as folk dances, folk songs, and seeing those around the world creating their own music! It’s been highly requested, and I’m so excited to bring it to so many homeschools and music classrooms.
Today, however, I’m sharing a 15-Minute Music Lesson about Instruments Around the World. And, there is an awesome freebie associated with it as well!

Musical Instrument Notebooking Pages is a PDF download of 219 different musical instruments from around the world.
A black and white drawing of the image is on half of the sheet and can be used for coloring. The other side has line so the student can write about the instrument. Suggestions for what to write include where the instrument from, what instrument family it’s in (brass, percussion, keyboard, string, or woodwind), what style of music it usually plays (classical, orchestral, bluegrass, rock, folk, etc.), and some famous musicians who play that instrument.

Bagpipes
Instrument Family: Woodwind
Country of Origin: Scotland
Facts: The bagpipes have a bag that inflates with air and pipes called canters and drones. Bagpipes have been played at least since the Middle Ages, if not longer.
Balalaika
Instrument Family: String
Country of Origin: Russia
Facts: The balalaika has a triangular wooden body with three strings. It is often used to play Russian folk music and for dancing.
Erhu
Instrument Family: String
Country of Origin: China
Facts: In English, the erhu is sometimes called a Chinese violin or Chinese two-stringed fiddle. The erhu only has two strings and is played with a bow. It can sound beautiful and sorrowful, as well as imitate animals such as birds chirping and horses neighing.

Fujara
Instrument Family: Woodwind
Country of Origin: Slovakia
Facts: The fujara is a large type of flute and has three holes on the front. In the past, shepherds played the fujara for recreation. Now, it is popular in Slovak folk festivals.
Kalimba
Instrument Family: Percussion
Country of Origin: Africa (countries such as Nigeria, Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe)
Facts: The kalimba contains a wooden resonator box with metal tines attached. These types of instruments are thousands of years old, and the tines were originally made of bamboo.
