Can you believe that in just a little over a year, our nation will celebrate its 250th birthday? The America 250 commemoration is almost here, and I can’t think of a better way for homeschool families to prepare than by learning about our country’s history through the beauty and joy of music and art.
I just created something very close to my heart, and new online course for all ages called Music and Art of America: 250 Years of Freedom. It's an 18-week online course designed to help families celebrate America’s story—with only one 15-minute lesson a week!
A Family Road Trip That Sparked the Idea
This past summer, my family took a road trip through Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, and Gettysburg, three of the most historic areas in our nation.
We walked the cobblestone streets where revolution began, toured the city of Independence Hall, and stood in the same spots where ordinary men and women shaped the extraordinary idea of freedom.
In Philadelphia, I felt chills standing before the Liberty Bell, and in Boston, we stood in the intersection where the Boston Massacre occurred, and I imagined the courage of those early Americans. As a mom and a teacher, moments like those reminded me why I love American history—and how deeply I want the next generation to cherish it too.
That trip planted the seed for this new course. I wanted to give families a way to relive America’s journey through music and art—to feel it, not just read about it.
A Weekly Celebration of America’s Story~ the Fine Arts Way
Starting in January 2025, your family can begin this 18-week adventure through 250 years of American creativity. Each short, engaging lesson explores a new era of our nation’s story:
Colonial and Revolutionary War songs
Civil War ballads
Cowboy tunes of the frontier
Jazz, ragtime, and the Harlem Renaissance
Broadway musicals and film scores
Country, pop, and modern American classics
Each lesson also includes an art study featuring an iconic American painting in the Enrichment Studies Fine Art Pages format—from Winslow Homer’s Snap the Whip, Grant Wood’s The Appraisal, and Horace Pippin's Harmonizing—so your children can connect history, music, and art in a meaningful way.
You’ll listen, sing, and even dance along to the soundtrack of American history—all in just 15 minutes a week.
Perfect for Morning Time, homeschool co-ops, or family learning of all types, this course makes it simple to weave patriotism and fine arts into your homeschool year.
How it Works
Each lesson includes a short lesson to read, embedded videos to watch (or you can just listen to the music if you prefer), art appreciation through the wonderful Enrichment Studies Fine Art Page, and a fun activity—like learning to dance the Charleston or a country line dance, bucket drumming to some rock rhythms, or even writing your lyrics to a song.
Why Patriotism and Understanding American History Matter
I’ve always been deeply patriotic—I still tear up every time I say the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the National Anthem. When I see veterans march in a parade, my heart fills with pride. Our nation’s story, with all its struggles and triumphs, deserves to be remembered and celebrated.
Through Music and Art of America, I hope your family experiences that same gratitude and pride. Music and art have always been mirrors of who we are as a people—brave, creative, and free.
