15-Minute Music Lesson for Summertime (with free printable pack)

At the time of this writing, summer is almost over. As we head into fall, I thought it would be fun to focus once more on summertime and this time to do it through music. Listen to several selections for a fun and short 15-Minute Music Lesson for Summertime.

“Summer” from The Seasons by Alexander Glazunov:

This ballet premiered in 1900 by the Imperial Ballet in St Petersburg, Russia. Does it sound like nymphs and other enchanted creatures dance in the summer sun in a field of flowers?

Summer by Frank Bridge:

Listen as the instruments evoke an English summer in this orchestral tone poem, a “poem” without words, but with music instead. Does it make you feel like you’re in summer?

“Summer” from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi:

This music is called a concerto and is from the Baroque period of the 1600s. It’s part of a larger work called The Four Seasons, which has music from each season. Listen as “Summer” tells of the approach of an oncoming storm which finally arrives in force in the final movement.

“Summertime” from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin:

Gershwin wrote the “folk opera” Porgy and Bess in 1935. He was inspired by the blues and spiritual styles from the southern states of America. George Gershwin said he anted the aria “Summertime” to sound like a real folk song, written and sung by everyday people rather than a professional composer. The melody (tune) is simple and beautiful.
