How the Music and Art Homeschool Summit Can Help You Succeed in Your Homeschool (E55)
Music and art are essential components of a well-rounded homeschool education, yet they are often overlooked. That’s why I was thrilled to interview Justina Thurston, the host of the Music and Art Homeschool Summit and Bundle, on the Music in Our Homeschool podcast. Justina is the creator of Jus’ Classical, a musician, songwriter, and early childhood music teacher with over 20 years of experience. She’s also a homeschooling mom who is passionate about helping other families incorporate fine arts into their education.
In our conversation, Justina shared her journey in music and art, the benefits of fine arts education, and why she started the Music and Art Homeschool Summit. If you’re looking for ways to bring more creativity and beauty into your homeschool, this event is a fantastic opportunity!

Justina’s Journey in Music and Art
Justina has been surrounded by music her whole life. Her parents were avid choir singers, which led her to join choirs throughout her school years. She also learned to play the oboe and briefly played the cello. Her love for music led her to pursue a degree in music therapy, which combines music with helping people, particularly those with special needs. While she didn’t stay in music therapy, she found a calling in teaching through the Musikgarten program and later expanded her expertise to online music education.
Her journey into art education came later when she was teaching in a Classical Conversations homeschool group. She was asked to write skits that brought composers and artists to life, which later became YouTube videos and eventually full-fledged online courses. Through Jus’ Classical, she now offers engaging courses like Composer Detective, Artist Detective, and Drawing with Rembrandt, making fine arts accessible and enjoyable for homeschool families.
Why Music and Art Matter in Your Homeschool
Justina passionately believes that music and art are more than just electives; they are essential subjects that enrich every aspect of education. Here are some of the key benefits she highlighted:
- Imitating the Creator: Music and art reflect God’s creativity, allowing children to engage with beauty in a meaningful way.
- Developmental Benefits: Music enhances listening skills, movement, language development, social and emotional intelligence, and cognitive growth.
- Educational Integration: Music and art naturally connect with subjects like history, math, and science. For example, studying Bach’s compositions alongside the Baroque period deepens historical understanding, while art concepts like perspective reinforce mathematical principles.
- Lifelong Enjoyment: Unlike some academic subjects that may fade in relevance, music and art remain a source of joy and expression throughout life.
