How to Use Music to Teach Other Subjects in Your Homeschool (E64)
If you’re looking for creative, fun, and effective ways to teach multiple subjects in your homeschool, I have an exciting idea for you—use music! That’s right. Music isn’t just a subject on its own; it’s a powerful tool that can enhance your lessons in history, geography, science, Bible, and even cultural studies.
As a homeschooling mom of eight and a longtime music educator, I’ve found that combining music with other subjects not only makes learning more enjoyable, but it also helps kids remember what they learn.
And the best part? You don’t need to be a music expert to teach it. I’ve created easy-to-use, click-and-go courses that allow you to incorporate music seamlessly into your homeschool day.
Music and History
One of the easiest ways to connect music with another subject is through history. Music provides a rich backdrop to historical events and helps students connect emotionally to what they’re learning. For example, if you’re studying the 1800s, you can use my Romantic Era Music Appreciation course. Each week, listen to music from composers like Chopin, Schumann, and Brahms—musicians who lived during the time periods you’re studying in history.
If you’re working through American history, my American Music Appreciation course is a great companion. It includes lessons on spirituals, Civil War songs, jazz, and more—bringing the American story to life through sound.
Music and Geography
Geography becomes much more engaging when music is added! If you’re doing a state study, like we are in my homeschool this year, try the State Songs of the 50 U.S. States course. Every time we learn about a new state, we listen to its official state song. It’s a wonderful way to explore the uniqueness of each region.
And if you’re studying countries around the world, check out the World Music for Elementary course. From Australia to Colombia to Iceland, you’ll explore music, folk instruments, and traditional dances from various cultures. It’s an immersive way to learn geography and appreciate the diversity of the world.
Music and Science
Did you know music can even tie into science? Composers have long been inspired by nature, space, animals, and the elements. In my courses, you’ll find lessons that connect to themes like horses, oceans, and space. Listening to musical compositions inspired by thunderstorms, birdsong, or even the stars can help children engage more deeply with scientific concepts.
Music and Bible Study
If you’re studying the Bible in your homeschool, consider adding the Great Hymns of the Faith course. It includes the stories behind classic hymns, devotional content, and beautiful music to sing or listen to as a family. It’s a meaningful way to grow in faith together.
Music and Cultural Studies
Don’t forget holidays and cultural celebrations! Many of my lessons are centered around cultural traditions and seasonal events. Whether it’s Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, or Black History Month, there are music lessons you can tie into your cultural studies to make them more festive and memorable.
