Morning Time is one of the sweetest parts of the homeschool day—a chance to gather, breathe, and begin together. It certainly has made all the difference in my own homeschool, and if you haven't tried it yet, December might be the perfect time to add it!

During December, it can become even more meaningful when you fill it with the beauty of Christmas music. Whether your kids are toddlers or teens or all of the above, adding music to your morning routine helps everyone slow down, focus on what matters, and soak in the sounds of the season.

Here are some simple and inspiring ways to use Christmas music in your homeschool Morning Time this year.

Christmas Blessings Giveaway 2025

1. Begin Each Day with a Christmas Carol

Choose one traditional carol to sing together every morning for a week or two. Print the lyrics (or write them in your Morning Time notebook), play a recording, and sing along. Kids quickly memorize melodies when they repeat them daily, and these timeless texts quietly shape their understanding of faith, history, and language.

Try this:

  • “O Come, All Ye Faithful” to open December with joy and anticipation
  • “Silent Night” the week before Christmas to invite peace and reflection
  • “Joy to the World” on the final day before break for a joyful finale

You can even play different versions—classical choir, jazz trio, or children’s chorus—and talk about how the arrangements make the same song feel different.

2. Add a Short Listening Activity

Each day, choose one piece of Christmas music to listen to attentively. It might be a movement from Handel’s Messiah, a piece from Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, or even Vince Guaraldi’s A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. Encourage your kids to close their eyes and notice instruments, tempo, or mood.

Ask open-ended questions like:

  • What instruments do you hear?
  • How does this song make you feel?
  • What picture comes to mind as you listen?

3. Connect Music with Other Subjects

Morning Time is the perfect moment to weave music into your other lessons.

  • History: If you're studying 18th-century Europe, you can explore how Handel wrote The Messiah in just 24 days!
  • Geography: Listen to carols from different countries—“Fum, Fum, Fum” from Spain, “O du fröhliche” from Germany—and locate them on a map.
  • Language Arts: Use carol lyrics for copywork or poetry study. Notice rhyme, rhythm, and vocabulary from earlier centuries.

This integration helps children see how music is part of the larger story of culture and faith.

4. Include a Hands-On Element

Make music active! Give kids jingle bells, rhythm sticks, or a simple drum (or have them make their own!) and have them keep the beat during songs. For younger children, movement helps learning stick—march, sway, or tap along.

Older students might try accompanying on piano or ukulele, or even arranging their own version of a carol. It’s a wonderful way to make Morning Time lively and inclusive for all ages.

5. End with Reflection or Prayer

After the song and listening portion, take a quiet moment. Ask what part of the music stood out, or invite each child to share one word that describes how it made them feel. If your Morning Time includes prayer or Scripture reading, choose verses that echo the song’s message—like Luke 2 after singing “Angels We Have Heard on High.”

These brief reflections turn music from background noise into a moment of worship and connection.

6. Create a December Music Tradition

As you repeat this each year, your Morning Time will gain a rhythm your kids look forward to. They’ll remember “the day everyone wore Santa hats and sang around the tree!” These small, joyful rituals become part of your homeschool’s heritage—reminders that music and meaning belong together.
