Today I have a guest post about the WoodSongs Classroom Project. There are three different projects to choose from, and they’re free. Read on to get more details from them:

ITEM – Imagine home school families nationwide being introduced to the banjo with Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Or old-time bluegrass with JD Crowe, Paul Williams and Doyle Lawson. Or the legacy of the Carter Family with John Carter Cash. Or the guitar with Tommy Emmanuel. Or traditional jazz with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Or a performance play with Henry David Thoreau.
Or starting a school concert series for students.
Now, imagine all of this is FREE to parents.
The WoodSongs Classroom Project is the brainchild of folksinger Michael Johnathon and uses the streaming of popular WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour public radio and television broadcast as a teaching tool. Students watch select 25 minute segments of WoodSongs, and the lesson plans for middle, high and college level students are designed around each episode. This music-education series highlights our rural, organic, musical tradition. It also exposes students to the world of grassroots, rural “front porch” music they often do not experience listening to most commercial media. We explore people, artists, cultures, songs, history and instruments from across America and around the world. It is our hope to inspire creativity and an appreciation of music and art.
Each show features a youngster performing as well (we call them WoodSongs Kids), which adds peer excitement to the project. The lesson plans focus on music, the arts, history, literature, creative writing and social studies. Teachers can take students on a musical journey that will expose them to many genres of music. The goal of this project is to encourage love and passion for the arts that transcends money. You will be amazed at the array of choices you will have.
The WoodSongs curriculum is a valuable resource for classroom, private lessons and home school teaching because it really allows students to focus on the ways that music is inspirational to them. It opens up the art of conversation as it applies to the music; the sound of the instruments, the topics discussed among artists, the words to the songs, and the emotion that the music evokes as well. The broadcast allows for many teachable moments that really allow students to connect to the music and therefore apply this to their own music and style.
We believe that music education inspires learning throughout all subjects and a creativity that is transferable to daily life.
