1. Worship While You Work
Whether you’re folding laundry, driving to co-op, or washing dishes, your everyday tasks can become acts of worship when you fill the atmosphere with praise music. Set up a worship playlist to play during your chores. Sing along, hum the melodies, and let the truths wash over you. (Your kids will hear and see, and it will influence them in a good way, too!)
Try This:
- Play instrumental worship music during morning Bible time.
- Keep a Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen or even in the shower!
- Sing your favorite hymn as a breath prayer during the day.
You’ll be amazed at how your attitude and heart posture shift when your home is filled with songs of faith.
2. Start a Simple Hymn Study for Yourself
We often focus on hymn studies for our kids, but why not start one just for you? Hymns are rich in theology and have stood the test of time. Studying them can help you meditate on deep truths while learning about church history and worship.
Here’s how:
- Choose one hymn per week.
- Read the lyrics slowly and prayerfully.
- Look up the story behind the hymn.
- Copy the lyrics into your journal and write out what stands out to you.
- Sing it daily or listen to a beautiful recording.
Need a place to start? Try “Great is Thy Faithfulness” or “The Love of God.”
3. Use Music to Memorize Scripture
If you struggle to memorize Bible verses (like I do, especially as I get older!), set them to music. It’s how God’s people have passed down truth for generations. There are so many wonderful Scripture songs available that make it easier—and more joyful—to hide God’s Word in your heart.
Try this:
Search for your favorite verse on YouTube like this:
“Psalm 23 song KJV” or “Romans 8:28 song ESV”
You can also use these in your homeschool day to double up on Bible and music time with your kids!
4. Sing with Your Children—For Your Own Heart, Too
Singing with your children isn’t just for them—it’s for you, too. Pick a few hymns or worship songs and sing together daily. You’ll not only be discipling them, but also filling your own soul with God’s truth.
When my kids were little, we sang two songs every night before bed. Repeating those songs helped all of us truly learn them—and those truths stuck.
Try This:
Create a simple seasonal song list for your family to rotate through weekly. Include hymns, praise choruses, and Scripture songs.
5. Journal and Reflect on Meaningful Lyrics
Have you ever sung a song for years, then suddenly realized the words were straight from Scripture or had a deeper meaning you hadn’t noticed before?
Take time to reflect on meaningful lyrics. Write them in your journal, doodle around them, or use them as a prayer prompt.
Ideas to journal about:
- What truth is this song teaching me about God?
- How have I experienced this truth in my life?
- What part of this song moves me the most and why?
