Let's listen to some music about caring for and being grateful for this beautiful home we call Earth.
“For the Beauty of the Earth”
“For the Beauty of the Earth” by English composer John Rutter (born 1945) is a gorgeous choral song. The words were written by Folliott S. Pierpoint (1835-1917).
Hear it performed with a boys' choir and organ here.
And hear it again with an adult choir and orchestra here. Which do you like better?
“All Things Bright and Beautiful”
Now, listen to another John Rutter choral song called “All Things Bright and Beautiful” which talks about all the amazing creatures and other things we love about earth. The words of this song were first published in 1848 by poet Mrs. Cecil Alexander (1818-1895) in her Hymns for Little Children.
Here are the words to the original poem “All Things Bright and Beautiful.”
1. All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.
2. Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings.
3. The rich man in his castle, The poor man at his gate, God made them high and lowly, And ordered their estate.
4. The purple headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset and the morning, That brightens up the sky;−
5. The cold wind in the winter, The pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden,− He made them every one:
6. The tall trees in the greenwood, The meadows where we play, The rushes by the water, We gather every day;−
7. He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell, How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.
