“Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific

South Pacific is a 1949 Broadway musical with music composed by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It’s set during World War II on a South Pacific island. The musical was made into a movie in 1958. In the song “Some Enchanted Evening” Emile is expressing his love to Nellie, recalling how when they met at the officers’ club dance they were immediately attracted to each other.

“If I Loved You” from Carousel

Carousel is another musical by the writing team of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics). It was produced in 1945; the setting is in Maine. Jule and Billy meet at the town carousel and later talk about what it would be like if they loved each other.

“How Could I Ever Know” from The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden is a musical based on a 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, also called The Secret Garden. The composer is Lucy Simon, with script and lyrics by Marsha Norman. It premiered on Broadway in 1991. In “How Could I Ever Know” Archibald sees the ghost of Lily and she tells him that she always loved him. They come to the conclusion that her death was no one’s fault, and Archibald can finally let her go as she tells him to care for their child Colin.

“People Will Say We’re In Love” from Oklahoma

Oklahoma, which debuted on Broadway in 1943, was the first musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The movie was made in 1955. In “People Will Say We’re in Love,” Curly and Laurie are flirting.

“All I Ask Of You” from The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a 1986 musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. The story is based on the 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. It opened on Broadway in 1988 and is currently the longest-running show in Broadway history. In “All I Ask of You” Christine tell Raoul about her frightening encounter with the Phantom and then they promise to love each other.

“It Only Takes A Moment” from Hello Dolly

Hello Dolly is a 1964 musical with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The show is set in New York. In the song “It Only Takes a Moment” the men Cornelius, Barnaby, and Ambrose are each professing their love for their lady.

“My Funny Valentine” from Babes In Arms

Babes in Arms is a musical about a group of Long Island teens who spend a summer putting on a show. It was written in 1937 with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. In “My Funny Valentine” Billie is reflecting on her romance with Val.

“They Say It’s Wonderful” from Annie Get Your Gun

Annie Get Your Gun is a 1946 Broadway musical with music and lyrics both by Irving Berlin about the life of sharpshooters Annie Oakley and her husband Frank Butler. They sing to each other about love in the song “They Say It’s Wonderful.”

“Till There Was You” from The Music Man

The Music Man is a 1957 Broadway musical written by Meredith Willson. The straight-laced, uptight townspeople of River City, Iowa, including librarian and piano teacher Marian, are changed when con man Harold Hil arrives in town. Marian expresses her love to him in “Till There Was You.”

“Maria” from West Side Story

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in 1950s New York City. The music is by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It premiered on Broadway in 1957. Here, Tony is singing about the girl he has fallen in love with: “Maria.”

“You Were Meant for Me” from Singing in the Rain

Singing in the Rain began as a film in 1952 before it headed to the stage. The music was by Nacio Herb Brown and lyrics by Arthur Freed. Set in Hollywood just, actor Don Lockwood leads Kathy Selden onto an empty movie studio set to sing “You Were Meant for Me.”

I Must Have Done Something Good from The Sound of the Music

The Sound of Music is a 1959 Broadway musical with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It’s based on the true story of Maria who married Captain Georg von Trapp. The song “Something Good” is when the two finally realize they have fallen in love with each other.
